ICU & Hospitalization

Overview

When your pet requires more than a standard office visit, Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center (SOVSC) provides round-the-clock inpatient care designed to support their healing in a safe, monitored environment. Our hospital operates as a specialized critical care center, offering advanced monitoring and interventions that often exceed what is available at a general practice.

What truly sets our care apart is our specialized patient-assignment model. Instead of rotating responsibilities, our ICU nursing staff is assigned specific patients for their entire shift. This means your pet is cared for by a dedicated professional who gets to know their personality and “normal” behaviors, allowing them to detect subtle changes instantly and alert our doctors for early intervention.

Level 1 & 2: Stable Inpatient Support

These levels are appropriate for pets who are medically stable but require professional supervision that cannot be managed at home.

  • Regular Assessments: Periodic monitoring of vital signs and overall comfort

  • Daily Care: Scheduled walks, comfort breaks, and routine bed checks

  • Medical Management: Administration of medications and treatments as indicated by the doctor

Level 3: ICU Care for Critically Ill Patients

Level 3 is intended for unstable patients who require vigilant oversight and advanced technology to monitor their condition.

  • Frequent Reassessments: Constant nursing oversight to respond to changes the moment they occur

  • Advanced Monitoring: Continuous or frequent tracking of blood pressure, ECG (heart rhythm), blood glucose, lactate, or PCV/TS (blood concentration/protein)

  • Rapid Adjustments: Immediate modification of treatment plans based on real-time diagnostic data

Level 4: Critical Care & Life Support

Reserved for our most fragile patients, Level 4 provides constant, hands-on intervention. At this level, your pet is assigned to a dedicated nurse whose sole focus is their survival and comfort.

  • Constant Intervention: Hands-on nursing care provided hourly or more frequently

  • Advanced Life Support: May include invasive measures such as intubation or mechanical ventilation for pets unable to breathe on their own

  • Active Monitoring: These patients are never “just being watched”; they receive active, life-saving intervention throughout every hour of their stay

Specialized Care Environments

  • Contagious (Isolation) Ward: To ensure the safety of all our patients, we maintain a dedicated isolation ward for pets with potentially infectious conditions

  • Bio-Security Protocols: Our staff utilizes full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to provide high-level care while strictly preventing cross-contamination to other areas of the hospital

Our goal is always the same: to provide the highest standard of medicine in a compassionate environment, treating every patient as if they were our own.
