Advanced Diagnostics

Overview

At Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center (SOVSC), we believe that a fast, accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. Our hospital is equipped with the same high-level diagnostic technology used in human medicine, allowing our doctors to look deeper, act faster, and provide the life-saving interventions your pet needs.

High-Resolution Diagnostic Imaging

Imaging allows us to visualize internal structures non-invasively, providing critical answers without the need for immediate surgery.

  • Multi-Slice CT & Fluoroscopy: Our Computed Tomography (CT) scanner provides detailed cross-sectional views for trauma, oncology (cancer) staging, and complex orthopedic assessments. Fluoroscopy provides dynamic, real-time “moving” X-rays for image-guided interventions.

  • Advanced Ultrasound: We offer high-resolution evaluation of the abdomen, thorax (chest), and neck, including ultrasound-guided biopsies.

  • Echocardiography and Arrhythmia Diagnostics: Specialized cardiac ultrasounds evaluate heart murmurs and heart failure. We also utilize ambulatory Holter monitoring and in-hospital telemetry for continuous heart rhythm evaluation.

  • Digital Radiography (X-ray): Fast, high-quality images for soft tissue and orthopedic studies that can be shared electronically with your primary veterinarian.

Rapid In-House Testing and Pathology

Minutes count during an emergency. Our in-house laboratory provides immediate results for critical cases.

  • Comprehensive Bloodwork: We perform on-site Hematology (CBC), Chemistry (organ function), and electrolyte panels to monitor vital health markers.

  • Cage Side Triage Testing: Immediate measurement of blood gas, pH, glucose, and lactate levels for our most unstable patients.

  • Cytology Support: We perform onsite fluid and tissue analysis (cytology) and utilize digital submission for board-certified pathologist reviews with a turnaround of 24 hours or less.

  • Reference Lab Partnerships: For highly specialized genetic, autoimmune, or infectious disease testing, we partner with leading national and university laboratories.

Life-Support & Advanced Respiratory Therapy

For patients with severe respiratory distress, we provide advanced interventions that go beyond standard oxygen cages.

  • Mechanical Ventilation: This is a sophisticated life-support treatment where a machine helps or takes over a pet’s breathing. It is used for pets with severe lung disease or trauma who cannot maintain adequate oxygen on their own.

  • High Flow Oxygen Therapy: This delivers warmed, humidified oxygen through specialized nasal prongs. It is often better tolerated than tight masks and provides critical support for patients with pneumonia or pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs).

Transfusion Medicine & Donor Program

We are one of the few facilities in the region capable of providing comprehensive Transfusion Therapies.

  • Component Therapy: We maintain stock of whole blood, packed and red blood cells, plasma, and cryoprecipitate for trauma and urgent medical needs.

  • Advanced Compatibility Testing: To ensure the safest administration, we perform on-site blood typing and crossmatching to reduce the risk of reactions.

  • Staff-Led Donor Program: We maintain an in-house whole blood donor program featuring carefully screened staff-owned pets, ensuring rapid access to life-saving products in emergencies.

Our Commitment to Safety:

During any advanced diagnostic or life-support procedure, your pet is monitored by a trained team of technicians and doctors using dedicated equipment to ensure they remain safe, stable, and comfortable.
